Some of us are born into a world of privilege where fun is taught to us early on, it becomes habit, and great things just flow into our experience easier because of it. As a student of life, hopefully we all can remember the fun of playing somewhere and having it interrupted by pain, maybe of a scrape or fall. Perhaps during learning how to ride a bike, skate, or trying to be the fastest in a race, we experienced the bounce of the brief unhappiness of seeing our own blood and tears. We brushed ourselves off, wiped away the tears, maybe a bandage and as we continued with the play, we learned from it. We became better because of it. Life teaches the best of us that it’s just part of the process of becoming great.

Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z spoke about being a child, playing outside of his home, and having it interrupted by gunfire and violence where he and other children would have to run for cover somewhere for a while before returning to fun later. Unfortunately, this is the experience of many of us. Not the best situation. Some may agree that it is indeed horrific, but it is enough for us to want and dream of better. The good news is that the wanting, dreaming, and positively praying for the better, joy, or fun is the essence of life. The lack of joy or fun, while you are “living”, is really just a momentary distraction until you can get focused on something fun again. The great news is that the pursuit of happiness and fun is enough for us all to have The Good Life whatever that means to each of us.

It was enough for Mr. Carter as he is now worth more than 1 billion dollars. You may be familiar with the story of this champion recording artist. Jay-Z was a Brooklyn, NY project kid, who grew from dealing drugs under his mother’s nose and playing with poem creating at the kitchen table under her watchful eyes to the musical artist, entrepreneur, mogul, philanthropist, father, husband (he’s married to Beyonce y’all!), actor, and author that we know today.

 He dealt with the rejection of record companies by starting his own and would go on to make his first million dollars as an artist on his record label. This is where we find him speaking of having fun in the video above at (24:17). Jay-Z actually says: “The most fun I had in the music business was us having this little rinky dink record company and… you know, going up in radio stations and…, you know, other places as if we were Universal… you know, and speaking as if… you know…we sold 100 million records when in fact we sold nothing. So, it feels like that time again for me…” Now he really resonated with that feeling because it is reported that he would go on to sell that “rinky dink” record company, Rocafella Records, for 11 million dollars to Def Jam. He has gone on to have an unheard of nearly 30-year career as a musical artist and continues to generate phenomenal wealth from several successful business ventures. These would include a clothing line, Rocawear, that sold for 204 million dollars, a short but meaningful investment in the now Brooklyn Nets basketball team, and an upscale sports bar and nightclub, 40/40, in Manhattan, NY. There are too many ventures to mention without our forgetting something, so we will focus on what stands out at the moment. 

Jay-Z signed a $200 million, 10-year deal with concert conglomerate Live Nation Entertainment. His entertainment label Roc Nation launched a sports-management division called Roc Nation Sports. Jay-Z bought the upscale brand of champagne, Armand de Brignac, worth a half billion dollars ($500 million) and is also half owner of D’Usse, a cognac made by Bacardi. He bought the company behind Tidal, a music streaming service for $56 million that is as of today (2018) worth about $600 million (another half billion dollars). He is also forward thinking as an investor in JetSmarter, the startup that allows private jet usage like that of an Uber or Lyft with the intent for greater success. He also owns islands and real estate that we are aware of that is valued at more than $100 million.

Shawn Carter has given us the Blueprint to the fun of success at the highest levels on so many levels. The documentary above gives great insight into his inspirations, integrity, and perspectives as a man. When you think of the fact that he was raised in the poverty of Marcy Projects by his mother and the challenges that brings, she deserves a lot of credit for giving him the foundation to develop good instincts and to have fun along the way, someway, anyway.
